INDIGENOUS COASTAL FORESTS

Kosi Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers visitors a wide range of unique experiences. We encourage all our guests to book in for at least 3 nights, to allow 2 full days to explore the area and appreciate the diversity. Our activities have been custom designed in collaboration with the local Tsonga people, and many of these are unique and available only to Chinderera guests.

Please note if your booking is NOT directly through the Chindereraecolodge.com website, any free tours advertised as part of a package, will not be applicable to your booking. 

Tsonga Fish Kraal WALK

A unique tour to the area, where you will be accompanied by our guide on a 3-4 hour hike from Chinderera down to the lake system. 

Once there, you will see local Tsonga fisherman, and be guided through the fascinating history and current daily practice of catching fish. You may spend some time taking a swim and a quick snorkel in the channel system. 

The walk requires a moderate level of fitness, and will be done either barefoot or in comfortable walking sandals. 

This is a full day tour and we recommend you only do this if booked in for 2 or more nights, as it is an early start. TURTLE TOUR

The Bhanga Nek Turtle Tours comprise an evening walk up the beach at night with a designated guide from Ezemzelo, and takes place from 1 November – end February each year offering guests an experience of a lifetime. Laying time is November and December, and the hatchlings make their dash for the ocean January and February. Permits costs around R200 per person, and transport (approx 1 hour drive) about R350 per person.

Kosi Mouth Hike

This hike leaves the lodge along a trail that takes you along twisting paths through gorgeous scenery. It may include a short canoe activity for an extra nominal fee.

The hike requires a good degree of fitness and can take 5-6 hours

KOSI KAYAK TRIP

As you kayak leisurely for 2-3 hours through the crystal clear waters of the Kosi Lake system, you will hear the African Fish Eagle calling, or even see one catching its prey. Or you may see a rare Palm Nut Vulture, the only vegetarian vulture in the world, as it feasts on the fruits of the raffia palms.

SNORKELING

Being in a pristine coastal reserve the chance to snorkel is widely sought after. You can either hike down to the river mouth or be driven, after which you can snorkel in the pre-identified safe zones (aquarium).

Whilst we try our best to keep the activities going every day, weather does sometimes require us to either reschedule or adjust the activity schedule. Please take note where some activities are seasonal, such as the Turtle Tour, which runs from November to February (these dates are not within our control).

Most of the activities require a good degree of fitness, and we encourage you to pack correctly to take advantage of your once in a lifetime visit to the area. A full recommended packing list is available in our FAQs.

The Izibaya Trail

The Izibaya Trail takes you hiking through the indigenous coastal forests and the crystal clear waters of Lake Mpungwini, exploring the traditional Tsonga fish kraals, Raffia Palm kayaking, and snorkelling in the clear lake channels.

African Fish Eagles & Palm Nut Vultures call from the skies, occasional hippos bask peacefully in the lake, and Samanga and Vervet monkeys play in the forest canopy.

The trail continues up one of the highest forested coastal dunes in the world, to visit the Tsonga village of eNkovukeni, overlooking the entire lake system below, and enjoying a delicious, traditionally prepared lunch of fresh fish, warm Tsonga hospitality and spectacular views.

The Kuguma Trail takes you hiking through the indigenous coastal forests and the clear shallow waters of Lake Makhawulani, past Mangrove forests, and over one of the highest forested coastal dunes in the world.

The trail continues along a pristine stretch of coastline within the Marine Sanctuary to Kosi Bay Estuary, where it meets the Indian Ocean. We invite guests to enjoy guided snorkelling in the ‘Aquarium’ and tidal ocean pools to swim with an abundant variety of fish species, and where the African Fish Eagles, Pied, Giant and Mangrove Kingfishers, Samanga and Vervet monkeys all welcome you into their paradise.
